Luke the physician wrote how Peter spoke to the multitude gathered outside the house where the upper room was located. He said, “let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God has made that same Jesus, whom you have crucified, both Lord and Christ”, and in chapter two and verse thirty-seven of the book of Acts Luke shared when the multitude, “heard this, they were pricked in their heart” where we read:
Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?
The verse begins, “Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, ...” Luke began with the words, “Now when they heard this” which means “then at the time and moment they, the multitude of people, were endowed with the faculty for hearing, perceiving and understanding what Peter said”, “they were pricked in their heart” or “they, the multitude, were pierced, pained and sharply agitated with a vehement emotion of sorrow within their souls or minds which are the fountain and seat of the thoughts, passions, desires, appetites, affections, purposes and endeavors”, “and said unto Peter” which means “and uttered, declared, proclaimed and asked Peter whose name means a little rock or stone” “and to the rest of the apostles” or “and to the other students, pupils and attendants of Jesus who were the sent out ones” the following question. Luke shared how “the multitude” was “pierced in their souls” after they heard “Peter's” words, and they began to ask “Peter” and Jesus' other disciples” the following question.
The verse continues, “... Men and brethren, what shall we do?” Luke added the words, “Men and brethren” or “male human beings and brothers”, “what shall we do” which means “what are we, the multitude, to make ready, perform or produce”? Luke shared how the multitude wanted to know how they were to respond to His words.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the conviction of the Holy Spirit of God came upon every person in the multitude after they knew they were responsible for killing God's Messiah. Everyone who sins killed Jesus, and because there was no other way for man to be “saved and redeemed” unless He died, Jesus willingly paid the price of death for their sins. By doing so, He provided access to God through belief and trust in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”. Those who are wise will understand their role in Jesus' death, and surrender their lives to Him even as this multitude desired to do.
Next time Luke shares how Peter tells the multitude, “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
