Luke the physician wrote how Jesus' remaining eleven disciples, women followers of Jesus, Jesus' mother Mary and His brother were gathered in an upper room in Jerusalem, and “in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,)”, and in chapter one and verse sixteen of the book of Acts Luke wrote how Peter began to speak and said, “men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled” where we read:
Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spoke before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.
The verse begins, “Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, ...” Luke began with the words, “men and brethren” which means “male human beings and brothers in Jesus Christ”, “this scripture” or “the Holy writing, thing written and certain portion of the Holy Writ” “must needs have been fulfilled” which means “needed to be filled up, furnished, completed and supplied liberally”. Luke shared how Peter began to speak by addressing the “men” and “brothers in Christ” who were in the “upper room” and referring to a “prophecy” in the Holy Scriptures that needed to be “filled up and completed”.
The verse continues, “which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spoke before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.” Luke added the words, “which the Holy Ghost” or “that the sacred, pure, morally blameless and religiously and ceremonially consecrated third person of the triune God, the Holy Spirit, coequal, co-eternal with the Father and the Son” “by the mouth of David” which means “through and by way of King David of Israel whose name means beloved” “spoke before concerning Judas” or “uttered, declared and proclaimed prior to and in advance of Judas whose name means he shall be praised and was the disciple who betrayed Jesus”, “which was guide to them that took Jesus” or “who lead and conducted the Jewish leaders and people who carried away and seized Jesus whose name means Jehovah is Salvation and is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate”. Luke shared how the “Holy Spirit” inspired “King David” to “speak” in advance about “Judas” who betrayed Jesus. (See Psalm 41:9 and Psalm 55:12-15 for more information.)
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Peter referred to the prophesy of King David that told about the betrayal of Jesus by “Judas”. Because “Judas” was no longer among the original “disciples” of Jesus, they were one short of the original twelve appointed by Him. We shall learn more about this in our next few verses, but for now let it suffice us to know God is involved with the every day events within a person's life. He desires to have a personal relationship with them through His Son Jesus, and when they surrender themselves to Him, He will forgive them of their sins, grant them everlasting life and lead them in His purpose and plan for their lives. Those who are wise will carefully examine the speech of “Peter” and submit themselves to Jesus as their “Savior and Lord”.
Next time Luke shares how Peter says Judas, “was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
