Luke the physician wrote, “in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,) Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spoke before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus”, and in chapter one and verse seventeen of the book of Acts Luke wrote how Peter said Judas, “was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry” where we read:
For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry.
The verse begins, “For he was numbered with us, ...” Luke began with the words, “for he was numbered” which means “because, since and on account that he, Judas, was accounted and reckoned” “with us” or “alongside us, the other disciples of Jesus”. Luke shared how “Peter” spoke these words to the people within the “upper room” because “Judas” was formally with them in the ministry.
The verse goes on to say, “... and had obtained part of this ministry.” Luke continued with the words, “and had obtained part” or “and received by divine allotment a portion” “of this ministry” which means “pertaining to the service and office belonging to the disciples of Jesus”. Luke shared how “Peter” referred to the way “Judas” was “divinely allotted” a portion of the “disciples of Jesus'” service among people.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how “Peter” told the other disciples and people in the “upper room” how “Judas” was accounted as one of them who had been allotted by God a certain “portion” of His “service and ministry” among people. “Judas Iscariot” was one of Jesus' original disciples, and now he was not with them. We shall see what happened to Judas in our next verse, but for now let all who read these words understand there was an attachment of “Judas” to the “ministry of Jesus Christ”, and now it was gone. Those who yield to Jesus will have their sins forgiven and be granted everlasting life with God, and they should always seek to continue in the “ministry” or “service” among people that He “allots” for their life. Let all who read these words carefully consider “Peter's” words.
Next time Luke shares how Peter says, “this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
