In the book of Joshua, we learned how Joshua told the Reubenites, Gadites and the half tribe of Manasseh, “take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the LORD charged you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul. So Joshua blessed them, and sent them away: and they went unto their tents”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse seven of Joshua we learn, “to the one half of the tribe of Manasseh Moses had given possession in Bashan” where we read,
Now to the one half of the tribe of Manasseh Moses had given possession in Bashan:
but unto the other half thereof gave Joshua among their brethren on this side Jordan westward. And when Joshua sent them away also unto their tents, then he blessed them,
The verse reads, “Now to the one half of the tribe of Manasseh Moses had given possession in Bashan:” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “now to the one half of the tribe of Manasseh” which means “in reference to the one-half clan or people group belonging to Manasseh whose name means ‘causing to forget’ and was the eldest son of Joseph and progenitor of the tribe of Manasseh” “Moses had given possession” or “Moses whose name means ‘drawn out’ and was the prophet, lawgiver and leader of the exodus put, set, assigned and delivered land, property and territory” “in Bashan” which means “within Bashan whose name means ‘fruitful’ and was a district east of the Jordan known for its fertility which was given to the half-tribe of Manasseh". Joshua or the writer shared the one-half people group of “Manasseh” was provided with a territory within “Bashan”.
The verse continues, “but unto the other half thereof gave Joshua among their brethren on this side Jordan westward.” Joshua or the writer added the words, “but unto the other half thereof” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover to the other one-half tribe of Manasseh” “gave Joshua” or “put, set, assigned and delivered Joshua whose name means Jehovah is salvation” “among their brethren” which means “in the midst and middle of their, the one-half tribe of Manasseh’s, kindred, kinsmen and relatives” “on this side Jordan westward” or “upon the western side of the Jordan whose name means ‘descender’ and was the river of Palestine running from the roots of Anti-Lebanon to the Dead Sea a distance of approximately 200 miles (320 km)”. Joshua or the writer shared how the “other half” of the people group belonging to “Manasseh” was given territory on the western side of the Jordan River by “Joshua”.
Finally the verse says, “And when Joshua sent them away also unto their tents, then he blessed them.” Joshua or the writer concluded this verse with the words “and when Joshua” or “and at the time and moment Joshua whose name means Jehovah is salvation” “sent them away also” which means “put, directed and dismissed them, the one-half tribe of Manasseh even so and indeed” “unto their tents” or “to their, the one-half tribe of Manasseh’s, transient dwellings, homes and habitations”, “then he blessed them” which means “at that time he, Joshua, saluted and thanked them, the one-half tribe of Manasseh”. Joshua or the writer ended this verse by sharing how “Joshua” honored and thanked the other one-half “tribe of Manasseh” and dismissed them to their homes.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how the two different halves of the “tribe of Manasseh” were granted their inheritance. One-half of the “tribe of Manasseh” receive their inheritance on the eastern side of the Jordan River “in Bashan”, and the other half received their inheritance on the western side. As God promised, the “tribes” of Israel were receiving their portion of the promised land. God fulfills His word, and when we yield our lives to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and raised Him from the dead after three days, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put His Holy Spirit within us to guide us into all truth and help us live in a manner that is pleasing to Him regardless of our location in the world.
