In the book of Joshua, we learned how,“Israel served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that overlived Joshua, and which had known all the works of the LORD, that he had done for Israel”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse thirty-two of Joshua, the writer shared how, “the bones of Joseph, which the children of Israel brought up out of Egypt, buried they in Shechem” where we read,
And the bones of Joseph, which the children of Israel brought up out of Egypt, buried they in Shechem, in a parcel of ground which Jacob bought of the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for an hundred pieces of silver: and it became the inheritance of the children of Joseph.
The verse reads, “And the bones of Joseph, which the children of Israel brought up out of Egypt, buried they in Shechem, …” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “and the bones of Joseph” which means “and the physical bones of the body belonging to Joseph whose name means ‘Jehovah has added’ and was the eldest son of Jacob by Rachel”, “which the children of Israel brought up” or “that the offspring and progeny belonging to Israel whose name means ‘God prevails’ and is the name of the descendants and the nation of the descendants of Jacob, carried with them” “out of Egypt” which means “from Egypt whose name means ‘land of the Copts’ and was a country at the northeastern section of Africa, adjacent to Palestine, and through which the Nile flows”, “buried they in Shechem” or “entombed they, the people of Israel, within Shechem whose name means ‘back or shoulder’ and was the son of Hamor, the chieftain of the Hivites at Shechem at the time of Jacob's arrival”. The writer shared how the physical “bones” belonging to “Joseph” that were carried with the offspring belonging to “Israel” from “Egypt” were entombed by the people of “Israel” within “Shechem”.
The verse goes on to say, “… in a parcel of ground which Jacob bought of the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for an hundred pieces of silver:” Joshua or the writer continued with the words, “in a parcel of ground” which means “within a smooth or flattened piece of land” “which Jacob bought” or “that Jacob whose name means ‘heel holder or supplanter’ and was the son of Isaac, grandson of Abraham, and father of the twelve patriarchs of the tribes of Israel” “of the sons of Hamor” which means “pertaining to the male offspring and progeny belonging to Hamor whose name means ‘he-ass’ and was the Hivite prince of the city of Shechem when Jacob entered Palestine”, “the father of Shechem” or “the male progenitor and ancestor belonging to Shechem whose name means ‘back or shoulder’ and was the son of Hamor, the chieftain of the Hivites at Shechem at the time of Jacob's arrival” “for an hundred pieces of silver” which means “one hundred units or weights pertaining to silver metal”. The writer shared how “Joseph” was buried in a portion of land that “Jacob” purchased from the offspring belonging to “Hamor” who was the male progenitor belonging to “Shechem” for one hundred silver metal tokens or units.
Finally the verse reads, “and it became the inheritance of the children of Joseph.” The verse concludes with the words, “and it became the inheritance” or “it, the burial ground of Joseph, came to happen and exist as the portion, share and heritage” “of the children of Joseph” which means “pertaining to the offspring and progeny belonging to Joseph whose name means ‘Jehovah has added’”. The writer ended this verse by sharing how the offspring of “Joseph” inherited the share of ground in which he was buried.
When we consider the words in this verse, we discover where the “bones of Joseph” were buried in the promise land. (See Genesis 50:25; Exodus 13:19) The people of Israel entombed his body in “Shechem” which became the inheritance of “Joseph’s” offspring. “Joseph” instructed the people of Israel to carry his “bones” back to the promise land with them when they returned, and after they obeyed his directive, they inherited the land in which he was buried. God wants us to hear and obey Him in a similar fashion to this, and when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and raised Him from the dead after three days, He made the way for us to be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and equipped with His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and empower us to live according to that truth as we listen to and adhere to His plan for our lives. (See John 3:16; 16:13; Acts 1:8; Revelation 4:11)
