In the book of Joshua, we learned how, “to the one half of the tribe of Manasseh Moses had given possession in Bashan: but unto the other half thereof gave Joshua among their brethren on this side Jordan westward. And when Joshua sent them away also unto their tents, then he blessed them, and he spoke unto them, saying, Return with much riches unto your tents, and with very much cattle, with silver, and with gold, and with brass, and with iron, and with very much raiment: divide the spoil of your enemies with your brethren”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse nine of Joshua we learn how, “the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh returned” where we read,
And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh returned, and departed from the children of Israel out of Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go unto the country of Gilead, to the land of their possession, whereof they were possessed, according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Moses.
The verse reads, “And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh returned, …” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “and the children of Reuben” which means “and the offspring and progeny belonging to Reuben whose name means ‘behold a son’ and was the eldest son of Jacob by Leah and the progenitor of the tribe of Reuben” “and the children of Gad” or “and the offspring and progeny belonging to Gad whose name means ‘troop’ and was seventh son of Jacob by Zilpah, Leah's handmaid, and full brother of Asher and was the progenitor of the tribe of Gad” “and the half tribe of Manasseh” which means “and the one-half clan or people group belonging to Manasseh whose name means ‘causing to forget’ and was the eldest son of Joseph and progenitor of the tribe of Manasseh” “returned” or “turned and went back”. Joshua or the writer shared how the offspring of “Reuben, Gad and the one-half tribe of “Manasseh” went back to their homes.
The verse continues, “… and departed from the children of Israel out of Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go unto the country of Gilead, to the land of their possession,” Joshua or the writer added the words, “and departed” which means “and left and went away” “from the children of Israel” or “separate and apart from the offspring belonging to Israel whose name means ‘God prevails’ and is the name of the descendants and the nation of the descendants of Jacob” “out of Shiloh” which means “from Shiloh whose name means ‘place of rest’ and was a city in Ephraim and temporary home of the Ark of the Covenant and the Tabernacle, the place where Samuel grew up”, “which is in the land of Canaan” or “that exists within the territory, region and country belonging to Canaan whose name means ‘lowland’ and was the land west of the Jordan peopled by the descendants of Canaan and subsequently conquered by the Israelites under Joshua”, “to go unto the country of Gilead” which means “to leave and depart to the district, territory and region belonging to Gilead whose name means ‘rocky region’ and was a mountainous region bounded on the west by the Jordan, on the north by Bashan, on the east by the Arabian plateau, and on the south by Moab and Ammon; sometimes called 'Mount Gilead' or the 'land of Gilead' or just 'Gilead'. Divided into north and south Gilead” “to the land of their possession” or “to the territory, district and region belonging to their, the tribes of Reuben, Gad and one-half of the tribe of Manasseh”. Joshua or the writer shared how the “tribe of Reuben, Gad and one-half tribe of Manasseh” left the offspring of “Israel” from “Shiloh” in “Canaan” to depart to the territory of “Gilead”.
Finally the verse says, “to the land of their possession, whereof they were possessed, according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Moses.” Joshua or the writer ended this verse with the words “and the land of their possession” or “and the territory, district and region pertaining to their, the tribes of Reuben, Gad and one-half tribe of Manasseh’s, property, share, portion and inheritance”, “whereof they were possessed” which means “in the which they, the Reuben, Gad and one-half tribe of Manasseh, grasped, took hold of and seized”, “according to the word of the LORD” or “in keeping with the utterance, declaration and proclamation belonging to Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “by the hand of Moses” which means “through the power, might and authority belonging to Moses whose name means ‘drawn out’ and was the prophet, lawgiver and leader of the exodus”. Joshua or the writer ended this verse by saying the “tribes of Reuben, Gad and one-half tribe of Manasseh” departed to their territories of inheritance which they seized in keeping with the declaration of Jehovah God and through the authority of “Moses”.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn how “the tribes of Reuben, Gad and one-half tribe of Manasseh” all went back to their territories of inheritance in keeping with Jehovah God’s declaration and authority of “Moses”. God said through “Moses” that He would provide territory for the people of Israel in the promise land, and He fulfilled His word. God loves the people of Israel, and He loves us. He proved His love toward us when He sent His Only Begotten Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead after three days. When we put our faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and provide us with His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and teach us to live in a manner that is pleasing to Him wherever He places us in the world.
