In the book of Joshua, we learned how,“it came to pass after these things, that Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died, being an hundred and ten years old”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse thirty of Joshua, the writer shared how, “they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnathserah” where we read,
And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnathserah,
which is in mount Ephraim, on the north side of the hill of Gaash.
The verse reads, “And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnathserah, …” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “and they buried him” which means “and they, the people of Israel, heaped up a mound over or entombed him, Joshua “in the border of his inheritance” or “within the edge, circuit and boundary belonging to his, Joshua’s, portion, share and heritage” “in Timnathserah” which means “located within Timnathserah or Timnath-heres whose name means ‘portion of the sun or abundant portion” and was a city given to Joshua as a inheritance in the mountains of Ephraim on the north of the hill of Gaash where he was buried”. Joshua or the writer shared how the people of Israel entombed “Joshua” in the boundary of his heritage within “Timnathserah”.
The verse continues, “… which is in mount Ephraim, on the north side of the hill of Gaash.” Joshua or the writer added the words, “which is in mount Ephraim” which means “that exists within the rising above the plain or range of mountains known as Ephraim whose name means ‘double ash-heap or I shall be doubly fruitful’ and was the second son of Joseph, blessed by him and given preference over his first son, Manasseh”, “on the north side of the hill” or “upon the northern edge pertaining to the mountain or hill country” “of Gaash” which means “belonging to Gaash whose name means ‘quaking’ and was a mountain of Ephraim where Joshua was buried”. Joshua or the writer shared how the people of Israel buried Joseph in “Timnathserah” which is located within the rising above the plain known as “Ephraim” in the northern edge of the mound of “Gaash”.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how the people of Israel cared for Joshua’s body by “burying” him within the boundary of his inheritance located in “Timnathserah” which was within the mountain of “Ephraim” and upon the northern edge of the mound of “Gaash”. Although these places may not be familiar to us, they were to “Joshua” and the people of Israel. “Joshua” served Jehovah God well, and his time for death came. The people of Israel cared for his body, and “Joshua’s” spirit went to be with the LORD. God wants all of us to have a personal relationship with Him through His Son Jesus who was sent into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and to be raised from the dead after three days, and when we yield to Him as our “Savior and Lord", He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put His Holy Spirit within us to guide us into all truth and help us to live in a manner that is pleasing to Him until we go be with Him. (See John 3:16; 16:13; Acts 1:8; Revelation 4:11)
