In the book of Joshua, we learned how, “the LORD gave unto Israel all the land which he swore to give unto their fathers; and they possessed it, and dwelt therein”, and in chapter twenty-one and verse forty-four of Joshua we learn how, “the LORD gave them rest round about, according to all that he swore unto their fathers” where we read,
And the LORD gave them rest round about, according to all that he swore unto their fathers:
and there stood not a man of all their enemies before them; the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hand.
The verse reads, “And the LORD gave them rest round about, according to all that he swore unto their fathers:” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “and the LORD” which means “and Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “gave them rest round about” or “granted, bestowed and assigned to them, the people of Israel, repose and quiet surrounding them and from every side”, “according to all that he swore” which means “in keeping with each, every and the whole of what He, Jehovah God, took an oath and promised” “unto their fathers” or “to their, the people of Israel’s, male progenitors and forefathers”. Joshua or the writer referred to how Jehovah God granted peace and quiet from every side of the people of Israel even as He promised their forefathers that He would do.
The verse continues, “and there stood not a man of all their enemies before them; the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hand.” Joshua or the writer added the words, “and there stood not a man” which means “and not a single male human being remained, continued, withstood or was established” “of all their enemies before them” or “from each, every and the whole of their, the people of Israel’s, hating foes and adversaries”: “the LORD” which means “Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “delivered all their enemies” or “put, set, granted, bestowed and ascribed each, every and the whole of their, the people of Israel’s, hating foes and adversaries” “into their hands” which means “into the might, power and authority of Israel”. Joshua or the writer shared how not a single male human being belonging to people of Israel’s hating adversaries was able to be established in their presence because Jehovah God gave them over to the power and might of Israel.
When we consider the words in this verse, we see how Jehovah God provided peace all around the people of Israel just as He promised their forefathers He would do, and there was not a single hating foe of Israel that was able to be established against them because Jehovah God gave their foe over to the might of “Israel”. God loves the people of Israel, and because He had a relationship with them, He provided for and defended them. God wants a personal intimate relationship with us too, and when He sent His SonJesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and to be raised from the dead after three days, He made the way through faith and trust in Him to be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and equipped with His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and help us live in keeping with His promise to save all who trust in, rely upon and cling to Him. (See John 3:15; Romans 10:9-10)
