Falling Upon the Stone or the Stone Crushing - Matthew 21:44

Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus asked the chief priests and the elders of Jerusalem, “Did you never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes? Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.”, and in chapter twenty-one and verse forty-five of his book, Matthew shares how Jesus told what would happen to those who, “fall on this stone” or “on whomsoever it shall fall” where we read:

And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken:

but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.

The verse reads, And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: ...” Matthew began with the words, “and whosoever” which means “and whatever person whether male or female” “shall fall on” or “descend upon, be thrust down, fall under judgment and prostrate upon” “this stone” which means “the primary corner stone” “shall be broken” or “will be dashed and shattered into pieces”. Matthew shared how the person who “prostrates” themselves upon this “primary cornerstone” will be “dashed into pieces”.

The verse goes on to say, “... but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder. Matthew continued with the word, “but” which means “nevertheless, moreover and” “on whomsoever” which means “upon whatever person whether male or female” “it shall fall” or “the primary cornerstone will descend upon, be thrust on or fall under it's judgment”, “it will grind him” or “the primary cornerstone will winnow and cleanse away the chaff from the grain, scatter and crush to pieces” “to powder” which means “to triturate and dust”. Matthew wrote how the person upon whom the “chief cornerstone falls” will be “pulverized to powdery dust”.

When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see the effect of the “primary cornerstone” upon people. Either a person will prostrate themselves before the “chief cornerstone” Jesus and be “broken” from their own pride, selfishness and vanity, or the “chief cornerstone” will fall upon them and pulverize everything within them. God's passion is to save people from their sins through believing in His Son Jesus' sacrifice for them, and those who come to Him must do so in humility and brokenness, however, those who reject God's way of salvation shall find His judgment to be severe, and whosoever declines His offer of salvation shall have nothing left at all within their lives upon which to stand.

Next time Matthew tells what happened, “when the chief priests and Pharisees had heard his parables, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
