Jesus the Prophet of Nazareth - Matthew 21:11

Matthew the apostle wrote when Jesus road into the city of Jerusalem on a donkey, “a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way. And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest. And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, Who is this?”, and in chapter twenty-one and verse eleven of his book, Matthew shares how the multitudes cried, “this is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth” where we read:

And the multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee.

The verse reads, And the multitude said, ...”. Matthew began with the words, “and the multitude” or “and the large crowd of people” “said” which means “uttered, declared and proclaimed”. Matthew shared how the “large crowd of people” began to answer the question of the people in the city.

The verse continues, “... This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee.” Matthew added the words, “this is Jesus” or “this One who comes is Jesus whose name means Jehovah is Salvation and is the Son of God, the Savior of the world and God incarnate” “the prophet” which means “the One who, moved by the Spirit of God and hence his organ or spokesman, solemnly declares to men what he has received by inspiration, especially concerning future events, and in particular such as relate to the cause and kingdom of God and to human salvation” “of Nazareth” or “belonging to Nazareth that means the guarded one and was the ordinary residence and home town of Christ” “of Galilee” or “belonging to the name of a region of northern Palestine, bounded on the north by Syria, on the west by Sidon, Tyre, Ptolemais and their territories and the promontory of Carmel, on the south by Samaria and on the east by the Jordan which means circuit”. Matthew wrote how the “multitude” answered the question as to who Jesus was by telling them He is “the prophet” who comes from “Nazareth” which was in the region of “Galilee”.

When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see how the crowd answered those who questioned by declaring Jesus to be “the prophet of Nazareth” from the region of “Galilee”. They acknowledged Him as one who knew the future and would bring them good tidings of things to come, and even though He was from the small “ordinary residence” of Nazareth which was located in “Galilee”, His message would benefit of all who yield their lives to Him. God desires to “save” every person through His Son Jesus Christ, and when they recognize Him for who He is and receive Him as their personal “Savior”, He promises to bless them and give them “everlasting life”.

Next time Matthew shares how, “Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple” when Jesus entered Jerusalem, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
