The Householder's Son - Matthew 21:37

Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus asked the chief priests and the elders of Jerusalem, “Hear another parable: There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and dug a wine-press in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country. And when the time of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive the fruits of it. And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another. Again, he sent other servants more than the first: and they did unto them likewise” and in chapter twenty-one and verse thirty-seven of his book, Matthew shares how Jesus told how the “householder”, “sent unto them his son” where we read:

But last of all he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son.

The verse reads, But last of all he sent unto them his son, ...” Matthew began with the word, “but” which means “nevertheless, nonetheless, moreover and” “last of all” or “in the latter end, coming after, lately and afterward” “he sent unto them” which means “the householder dismissed and ordered to depart” “his son” which refers to “the householder's male descendant and offspring”. Matthew shared how Jesus said the “householder” finally “sent his son” to his “vineyard” to receive his harvest of fruit.

The verse goes on to say, “... saying, They will reverence my son.” Matthew continued with the word, “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”, “they will reverence” or “the husbandmen, farmers and vinedressers will respect, regard and invert” “my son” which refers to “the householder's male descendant and offspring”. Matthew wrote how Jesus said the “householder” declared the “husbandmen” would give “respect” to his own “son”.

When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see the continued persistence of the “householder” as in this last effort to receive his “harvest”, he sent his own son to the “vineyard”. This is a great example of the way God persists in His desire to “save” every person as He sent His only Son Jesus to die for the sins of the whole world. God loves everybody, however, not everybody loves Him. Though He wants them to “reverence” His “Son”, God knows not all will. Let all who read these words examine their own hearts to be certain they are giving God's Son the “awe and respect” He deserves, and may they find themselves relying upon, clinging to and trusting in Jesus Christ as “Savior and Lord”.

Next time Matthew writes how Jesus tells how the husbandmen declared, “this is the heir; come, let us kill him, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
