How Is the Lord His Son? - Matthew 22:45

Matthew the apostle wrote, While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, Saying, What think you of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David.” To which Jesus asked,“How then does David in spirit call him Lord, saying, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit on my right hand, till I make your enemies your footstool?”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse forty-five of his book Matthew shared how Jesus questioned, “how is he his son?” where we read:

If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?

The verse reads, If David then call him Lord, ...” Matthew began with the words, “If David” which means “whether and since King David“then” or “therefore, wherefore, accordingly and consequently” “call him” which means “named and and saluted His Son as” “Lord” or “he to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah”. Matthew shared how Jesus asked the first portion of His question to the Pharisees as He referred to the way “King David” “called” His Son “master”.

The verse goes on to say, “... how is he his son?”. Matthew added the word, “how” which means “in what way and manner” “is he his son” or “is the Messiah His descendant and progeny”? Matthew shared how Jesus asked the Pharisees in what way was the “Lord” the “son” of King David.

When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see the core of Jesus' question to the “religious leaders”. Jesus wanted the Pharisees to answer how King David's Son could be his “Lord”. This was a difficult question for the “religious leaders” because their tradition was that no ancestor called their descendant “Lord”, and yet, Jesus is Lord. Jesus Christ descended from King David and came to the world to “save” people from their sins. Those who are wise shall consider who Jesus is and submit themselves to Him as their personal “Messiah, Savior and Lord”.

Next time Matthew wrote how, “no man was able to answer him a word, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
