Sit on My Right Hand Till Enemies are Your Footstool - Matthew 22:44

Matthew the apostle wrote, While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, Saying, What think you of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David.” Jesus then asked, “How then does David in spirit call him Lord, saying,”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse forty-two of his book Matthew shared how Jesus continued, “sit on my right hand, till I make your enemies your footstool?” where we read:

The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit on my right hand, till I make your enemies your footstool?

The verse reads, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit on my right hand, ...” Matthew began with the words, “the LORD” which means “he to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah“said” or “uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto my Lord” which means “to mine own one to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah”, “Sit” or “be seated and occupy the seat” “on my right hand” which means “the place of honor and authority”. Matthew shared how Jesus quoted the first part of Psalm chapter one hundred ten and verse one as He made His declaration to the Pharisees.

The verse continues, “... till I make your enemies your footstool?”. Matthew added the words, “till I make” which means “until God places an puts down” “your enemies” or “the Lord's foes, hated, opposing and hostile men” “your footstool” which means “the place upon which one puts their feet which denotes being subject to and reduced under one's power”?. Matthew shared how Jesus continued Psalm chapter one hundred ten and verse one as He referred to the time when God shall “put under the feet” every “foe” of the Messiah.

When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus' question to the Pharisees was based upon Holy Scripture where the Psalmist declared the “Son” of King David would be called “Lord” by him which went against their idea of not calling a “Son” Lord. Jesus knew the Pharisees would have difficulty answering this question, and He positioned Himself where they would have to choose whether or not He was the Messiah sent from God. Each person must decide “who Jesus is”, and when they “believe and trust” in Him as their “Savior and Lord” they join with Him until His “enemies” are His “footstool”.

Next time Matthew wrote how Jesus asked, “If David then called him Lord, how is he his son?, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
