How Does David Call Him Lord? - Matthew 22:43

Matthew the apostle wrote, While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, Saying, What think you of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse forty-three of his book Matthew shared how Jesus asked them, “how then does David in spirit call him Lord?” where we read:

He said unto them, How then does David in spirit call him Lord, saying,

The verse reads, He said unto them, ...” Matthew began with the words, “He said” which means “Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed“unto them” or “to the Pharisees”. Matthew shared how Jesus continued His questioning of the religious group known as the Pharisees.

The verse goes on to say, “... How then does David in spirit call him Lord, saying, ...”. Matthew continued with the words, “how then” which means “in what way and manner therefore, wherefore and these things being so” “does David” or “does King David” “in spirit” which means “in the vital principal by which the body is animated” “call him” or “name and salute his son as” “Lord” which refers to “one to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah”, “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”. Matthew shared how Jesus continued to ask the “Pharisees” in what way and for what reason did King David call his Son “Lord”.

When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see Jesus go toward the heart of His question to the Pharisees. They believed they knew the scriptures and the source of the Messiah, and therefore, they led the people around them accordingly. Jesus challenged them, and because a “Son” would never be called “Lord” by his ancestor, Jesus presented His question in a difficult way for them to answer. Jesus will continue His question by quoting scripture, but suffice it for now to understand that God has given His Son Jesus as the “Messiah, Savior and Lord”.

Next time Matthew wrote how Jesus quoted David, “the LORD said unto my Lord, Sit on my right hand, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
