Lights in the Upper Chamber - Acts 20:8

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Paul and the men with him, “sailed away from Philippi after the days of unleavened bread, and came unto them to Troas in five days; where we abode seven days. And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight”, and in chapter twenty and verse eight of the book of Acts Luke shared how, there were many lights in the upper chamber, where they were gathered togetherwhere we read:

And there were many lights in the upper chamber, where they were gathered together.

The verse begins, “And there were many lights in the upper chamber, ... Luke began with the words, “and there were many lights” which means “and there existed a great and abundant number of lamps or torches” “in the upper chamber” or “within the room which was located in highest part of the house”. Luke shared how there existed a lot of “lamps or torches” in the room located at the highest part of the house.

The verse continues, “... where they were gathered together.” Luke added the words, “where they were gathered” which means “ where Paul and his fellow disciples assembled” “together” or “with one another”. Luke shared how the “upper room” was the location where “Paul” and his fellow disciples were assembled.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn about some of the accessories within the “room” where “Paul” and His disciples assembled. “Many lamps” were there which gave the ability for “Paul” and his disciples to see one another. This will become a significant part of what happens next in Luke's account, but for now, let us understand that God knows where His disciples meet and the environment in which they assemble. His desire is to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and anyone who believes and trusts in Him will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life. Let all who read these words know and understand that God knows where they are and what they are doing there, and He is present when they assemble with fellow believers wherever they may be.

Next time Luke shares how, there sat in a window a certain young man named Eutychus, being fallen into a deep sleep” … who “sunk down with sleep, and fell down from the third loft, and was taken up dead, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
