Devise Not Evil - Proverbs 3:29

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said to his son, “Say not unto your neighbor, Go, and come again, and tomorrow I will give; when you have it by you”, and in chapter three and verse twenty-nine of Proverbs Solomon said, devise not evil against your neighbor” where we read,

Devise not evil against your neighbor, seeing he dwells securely by you.

The verse begins, “Devise not evil against your neighbor, .... Solomon began with the words, “devise not evil” or “do not engrave, plow, scratch or fabricate bad, disagreeable, unkind, wicked, distressful and adverse deeds”, “against your neighbor” which means “in opposition to your, Solomon's son's, companion, friend or other persons”. Solomon instructed his son not to plan and plot wickedness in opposition toward his companions and friends.

The verse goes on to say, “... seeing he dwells securely by you.” Solomon continued with the words, “seeing he dwells securely” or “since he, the son of Solomon's companion or friend, remains, stays and has his abode safely, boldly, carelessly and with confidence” “by you” which means “beside and alongside of you, Solomon's son”. Solomon referred to how his son's companions and friends lived and dwelt beside him in a safe and secure manner.

When we think through Solomons's words in this verse, we learn how he did not want his son to make devious plans in opposition to people who were his companions, friends or associates. These people knew Solomon's son, and they lived in a secure manner around him. These companions would be easier targets for mischievous activities, and Solomon's son was never to be a part of planning to hurt or take advantage of them. God dwells among us, and His desire is to have a personal relationship with us through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins. When we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us a mindset that will never take advantage of those who are near to us in fellowship and companionship.

Next time Solomon says, “strive not with a man without cause, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
