Are You Daniel? - Daniel 5:13

In the book of Daniel, Daniel shared how Belshazzar was “greatly troubled, and his countenance was changed in him, and his lords were astonied” because of a writing on the wall. “Now the queen, by reason of the words of the king and his lords, came into the banquet house: and the queen spoke and said, O king, live for ever: let not your thoughts trouble you, nor let your countenance be changed . There is a man in your kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of your father light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, was found in him; whom the king Nebuchadnezzar your father, the king, I say, your father, made master of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers. Forasmuch as an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and showing of hard sentences, and dissolving of doubts, were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar: now let Daniel be called, and he will show the interpretation”, and in chapter five and verse thirteen of his book Daniel shared how King Belshazzar asked, “are you that Daniel?”where we read,

Then was Daniel brought in before the king. And the king spake and said unto Daniel, Are you that Daniel, which are of the children of the captivity of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Jewry?

The verse reads, “Then was Daniel brought in before the king. And the king spoke and said unto Daniel, Are you that Daniel, …” Daniel began with the words, “then was Daniel brought in” or “at that time Daniel whose name means ‘God is my judge’ was called” “before the king” which means “in front and in the presence of the royal ruler and leader”. “And the king spoke” or “and the royal ruler and leader replied and responded” “and said unto Daniel” which means “and uttered, declared, proclaimed and asked Daniel whose name means God is my judge”, “are you that Daniel” or “do you exist as that particular Daniel whose name means God is my judge”. Daniel shared how he was carried and lead into the presence of the royal ruler and leader, Belshazzar, who responded and asked him, do you exist as that “Daniel”

The verse goes on to say, “… which are of the children of the captivity of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Jewry?” Daniel continued with the words, “which are of the children” which means “who exist among the offspring and progeny”, “of the captivity” or “pertaining to the ones who were exiled” “of Judah” which means “from Judah whose name means praised and referred to the territory of the tribe of Judah”, “whom the king of my father” or “that the royal ruler and leader belonging to my, Belshazzar’s, male progenitor and ancestor” “brought out of Jewry” which means “carried from Judah or the territory belonging to the tribe of Judah”? Daniel shared how King Belshazzar asked him whether he belonged to the offspring of the people of “Judah” who were exiled and was carried away from “Judah” by his grandfather Nebuchadnezzar.

When we meditate upon Daniel’s words in this verse, we see how the “queen’s” desire was followed as he was carried into the presence of King Belshazzar. The king desired to know if he belonged to the people of Judah who were exiled into Babylon by his forefather, King Nebuchadnezzar.. King Belshazzar verified that Daniel was who he was reported to be, and we shall see how he continues to say things to him before he asks him to interpret the writing on the wall. God knew these things all along, and He had a plan for Daniel’s life. He has a plan for our lives as well, and when we submit to His Son Jesus who came into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead after three days, He made the way for us to be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and given His Holy Spirit so we may be used in His Kingdom in whatever way He desires.

Next time Daniel shares how King Belshazzar tells Daniel, “I have even heard of you”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
