In the book of Daniel, Daniel shared how King Nebuchadnezzar “was driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hairs were grown like eagles' feathers, and his nails like birds' claws. And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up my eyes unto heaven, and my understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honored him that lives for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation: And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he does according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What are you doing?”, and in chapter four and verse thirty-six of his book Daniel shared how Nebuchadnezzar said, “at the same time my reason returned unto me” where we read,
At the same time my reason returned unto me; and for the glory of my kingdom, my honor and brightness returned unto me; and my counselors and my lords sought unto me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added unto me.
The verse reads, “At the same time my reason returned unto me; and for the glory of my kingdom, my honor and brightness returned unto me;” Daniel began with the words, “at the same time” or “and at the selfsame hour that King Nebuchadnezzar made his declaration about God” “my reason returned unto me” which means “my, King Nebuchadnezzar’s, knowledge, wisdom, intelligence and understanding came back to me, King Nebuchadnezzar”; “and for the glory” or “and on behalf of the esteem and honor”: “of my kingdom” which means “belonging to my, King Nebuchadnezzar’s, royal reign and kingly authority”, “my honor and brightness” or “my, King Nebuchadnezzar’s, majesty and splendor” “returned unto me” which means “came back to me, King Nebuchadnezzar” Daniel shared how King Nebuchadnezzar said at the selfsame moment that he acknowledged the Supreme Deity’s power and glory, his wisdom and intelligence came back to him and the majesty and splendor of his royal rule came back as well.
The verse continues, “and my counselors and my lords sought unto me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added unto me.” Daniel added the words, “and my counselors” which means “and my, King Nebuchadnezzar’s, advisors and ministers” “and my lords” or “and my, King Nebuchadnezzar’s, nobles and princes” “sought unto me” which means “desired, made petition, requested and asked of me, King Nebuchadnezzar”; “and I was established” or “and I, King Nebuchadnezzar, existed as straightened up, reestablished and confirmed” “in my kingdom” which means “within my, King Nebuchadnezzar’s, royal reign and kingly authority”, “and excellent majesty” or “and pre-eminent, surpassing, extreme and extraordinary increase and greatness” “was added to me” which means “existed as affixed and connected to me, King Nebuchadnezzar”. Daniel shared how King Nebuchadnezzar’s advisors and nobles made petitions of him, he was reestablished and surpassing greatness was connected to him.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Daniel how King Nebuchadnezzar’s knowledge and wisdom came back to him, his royal reign was reestablished, his advisors and nobles began to ask petitions of him again and his surpassing greatness was connected to him. In other words, God returned what King Nebuchadnezzar had lost and gave him even greater status than before. God wants us to humble ourselves like Nebuchadnezzar; repent of our sins like Nebuchadnezzar and to reestablish us like Nebuchadnezzar. When we submit to His Son Jesus who was sent into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the grave after three days, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put His Holy Spirit within us to return to us whatever we have lost and to increase us in His Kingdom so others will know the power of Jehovah God that is evident within our lives.
Next time Daniel shares how King Nebuchadnezzar says, “I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honor the King of heaven”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
