In the book of Daniel, Daniel shared how Belshazzar was greatly troubled because he saw a hand writing on the wall, and when his wise men were not able to tell him what the writing said or what it meant, he said, “I have heard of you, that you can make interpretations, and dissolve doubts: now if you can read the writing, and make known to me the interpretation thereof, you shall be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about your neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom. Then Daniel answered and said before the king, Let your gifts be to yourself, and give your rewards to another; yet I will read the writing unto the king, and make known to him the interpretation”, and in chapter five and verse eighteen of his book Daniel shared how he told King Belshazzar, “the most high God gave Nebuchadnezzar your father a kingdom” where we read,
O you king, the most high God gave Nebuchadnezzar your father a kingdom,
and majesty, and glory, and honor:
The verse reads, “O you king, the most high God gave Nebuchadnezzar your father a kingdom, …” Daniel began with the words, “O you king” or “O you, Belshazzar, royal ruler and leader”, “the most high God” which means “the highest Supreme Deity” “gave Nebuchadnezzar” or “granted, bestowed and assigned Nebuchadnezzar whose name means ‘may Nebo protect the crown’ and was the great king of Babylon who captured Jerusalem and carried Judah captive” “your father” which means “your, Belshazzar’s, male progenitor, ancestor and grandfather” “a kingdom” or “a royal reign and kingly authority”. Daniel shared how he told the royal ruler Belshazzar how the highest Supreme Deity provided his grandfather “Nebuchadnezzar” with kingly authority and a royal reign.
The verse goes on to say, “… and majesty, and glory, and honor:” Daniel continued with the words, “and majesty” which means “and dignity and greatness”, “and glory” or “and esteem, renown, prestige and eminence”, “and honor” which means “and magnificence”. Daniel continued to tell King Belshazzar how the Supreme Deity also provided his grandfather Nebuchadnezzar with greatness, prestige and magnificence.
When we consider Daniel’s words in this verse, we see how Daniel began to respond to King Belshazzar by reviewing the way Jehovah God the Supreme Deity provided his grandfather Nebuchadnezzar with a royal realm, dignity, eminence and magnificence. Daniel knew the source of King Belshazzar’s male ancestor’s gifts was the Supreme Deity Jehovah God. Everyone should realized that God owns everything, and all power is His to give it to whomsoever He wills. (See Psalm 24:1) When we yield our lives to His Son Jesus as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and help us by His Holy Spirit to recognize that He is the source of all the gifts to be used by us in His Kingdom.
Next time Daniel shares how he tells King Belshazzar, “all people, nations, and languages, trembled and feared before him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
