In the book of Daniel, Daniel shared how King Belshazzar was greatly troubled because he saw a hand writing on the wall, and when his wise men were not able to tell him what the writing said or meant, he called for Daniel who said, “this is the writing that was written, MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN”, and in chapter five and verse twenty-six of his book, Daniel told King Belshazzar, “the interpretation of the thing” where we read,
This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God has numbered your kingdom, and finished it.
The verse reads, “This is the interpretation of the thing:” Daniel began with the words, “this is the interpretation” or “and the following exists as the rendering and meaning” “of the thing” which means “pertaining to the inscription on the wall”. Daniel shared how the following exists as the rendering and meaning of the words “written” upon the wall.
The verse goes on to say, “MENE; God has numbered your kingdom, and finished it.” Daniel continued with the word, “MENE” which means “a mina or a weight or measurement”; “God has numbered” or “the Supreme Deity has reckoned, set and appointed” “your kingdom” which means “your, Belshazzar’s, royal rule and reign”, “and finished it” or “and completed and brought to an end Belshazzar’s royal rule and reign” Daniel said the word “MENE” meant that the Supreme Deity appointed and reckoned Belshazzar’s royal rule and reign, and now it was over and completed.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Daniel how the Supreme Deity Jehovah God was in control of the reign of Belshazzar. “MENE” meant Belshazzar’s set time for ruling was determined by God, and God knows the time allotted for all leaders and people in authority. King Belshazzar’s time was up, and even as God knew his days, He knows ours as well. God wants us to yield to His Son Jesus who came into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and to be resurrected from the grave after three days. When we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us a desire to always walk in His ways by the help of His Holy Spirit who will teach us to “number our days”. (See Psalm 90:12)
Next time Daniel shares how he tells King Belshazzar the meaning of, “TEKEL”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
