Matthew
was a Jew, writing specifically to the Jews about a Jew whose name
was Jesus. Matthew employs many Old Testament references throughout
his book as to prove that Jesus is indeed the Messiah for whom the
Jewish people awaited. Matthew began his book with the words, “The
book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of
Abraham”,
and he included,
“Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Judas and his brethren, Phares and Zara of
Thamar, Esrom, Aram, Aminadab, Naasson, Salmon, Booz of Rachab,
Obed of Ruth and Jesse”. In
chapter one and verse six of his book, Matthew shares the lineage of
Jesus through “David
and Solomon”
where
we read:
And
Jesse beget David the king; and David the king beget Solomon
The
verse reads, “And
Jesse beget David the king;”
Matthew began with the words, “and
Jesse”
which means “wealthy” “beget
David”
or “fathered and engendered David whose name means beloved” “the
king”
which refers to “the leader, prince, commander and lord of the
land”. Matthew continued Jesus' lineage with the “beloved” King
“David”.
The
verse goes on to say, “and
David the king beget Solomon of her that
had been the wife
of Urias;” Matthew continued with the words, “and
David”
which means “beloved” “the
king” or
“the leader, prince, commander and lord of the land” “beget
Solomon”
which refers to “fathered and engendered Solomon which means
peaceful” “of
her”
which means “from the woman” “that
had been the wife”
or “who was the spouse, mate and married woman” “of
Urias”
which refers to “the husband of Bathsheba who was one of David's
mighty men whose name means light of Jehovah”.
Matthew shared how “David”
had a son named “Solomon”
from “Bathsheba” who was the wife of “Uriah”.
When
we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we have reached the
second of the requirements for the Messiah's lineage. He must come
through “King David” as well as “Abraham”. This
is “Joseph's” line who was Mary the mother of Jesus' husband, and
we see “Mary's” line in chapter three of Luke. For now let us
know that God has His plan of “salvation” by Jesus who came
through the line of “David”. May all who consider these
things receive Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” today.
Next
time Matthew continues Jesus' lineage with “Roboam,
Abia and Asa”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until
tomorrow…there is more…
