Matthew
continued to share how there were three separate “fourteen
generations”
which were involved in Jesus' coming, and he referred to Jesus' birth
by the Holy Spirit and through Mary before she and Joseph “came
together”.
“Joseph”
was “not
willing to make”
Mary “a
public example”,
“But
while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord
appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, you son of David, fear
not to take unto you Mary your wife: for that which is conceived in
her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and you
shall call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their
sins. Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was
spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be
with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name
Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us”,
and in chapter one and verse twenty-four of his book, Matthew shares
how Joseph, “took
unto him his wife” where
we read:
Then
Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had
bidden him,
and
took unto him his wife:
The
verse reads, “Then
Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had
bidden him, ...”
Matthew began with the words, “Then
Joseph”
which means “moreover and Joseph whose name means let him add”
“being
raised”
or “awakened and aroused” “from
sleep”
or “out of the state of spiritual torpor and subsilience” “did
as the angel”
which means “made ready, performed, produced and acquired like the
messenger, envoy and one sent”
“of the Lord”
which means “belonging to the he
to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of
deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah”
“had bidden him”
or “assigned, ascribed, enjoined, commanded and appointed to
Joseph”. Matthew shared how Joseph woke up and “did”
what
the “angel”
instructed him to do.
The
verse continues, “...
and took unto him his wife:”
Matthew added the words, “and
took” or
“and accepted, received and assumed” “unto
him”
which means “to himself” “his
wife” which
means “Joseph's bride ”.
Matthew shared how Joseph married Mary.
When
we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see Joseph's obedience
to the “angel's” instruction. Though he initially thought
he should put Mary away privately, he was convinced by the “angel”
that Mary was impregnated by the Holy Spirit, and Joseph was chosen
to be Mary's husband. God had his plan to bring forth the Messiah,
and Joseph had his role to play. The “salvation” of man was at
stake, and God intended to send His Son Jesus into the world to be
the Messiah. Those who are wise will consider the greatness of our
God and His plan, and when Joseph married Mary, God's plan to “save”
people was coming together.
Next
time Matthew shares how Mary, “called
his name Jesus”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
