After
all the events of the tribulation period, the millennial reign of
Jesus and the “Great
White Throne”
judgment, John the apostle wrote, “And
I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the
first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John
saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven,
prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.” John
added, “and
I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of
God is
with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people,
and God himself shall be with them, and
be
their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and
there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither
shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new.
And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.
And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning
and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of
the water of life freely. He that overcomes shall inherit all things;
and I will be his God, and he shall be my son”,
and
in
Revelation chapter twenty-one and verse eight John shares about those
who, “shall
have their part in the lake which burns with fire”
where
we read:
But
the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and
whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have
their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone: which is
the second death.
The
verse reads, “But
the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and
whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, ...”
John began with the words, “but
the fearful”
which means “moreover and the timid who through cowardice give way
under persecutions and apostatize”, “and
unbelieving”
or “the faithless, incredulous and without trust”, “and
the abominable”
which means “those rendered foul, detestable, stink, abhor and
disgusted especially of idolatry”, “and
murderers”
or “those who criminally and intentionally kill others such as
homicide”, “and
whoremongers”
which refers to “a man who prostitutes his body to another's lust
for hire or who indulges in unlawful sexual intercourse such as a
fornicator”, “and
sorcerers” which
means “one who prepares or uses magical remedies such as drugs with
a drug abuser”, “and
idolaters” or
“a participant in any way in the worship of the heathen and
especially one who attends their sacrificial feasts and eats of the
remains of offered victims”, “and
all liars”
which means “and each, every, the whole and everyone of the ones
who are deceitful and false”. John heard the incrimination of
people who are “fearful,
unbelieving, whoremongers, sorcerers, idolaters and liars”.
The
verse goes on to say, “... shall
have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone:
which is the second death.”
John added the words, “shall
have”
which means “will indeed and for certain hold, own and possess”
“their
part”
which means “their own duly assigned lot, destiny and division”
“in
the lake”
or “within the large body like unto a huge pond” “which
burns”
which refers to “that is kindled, consumes and devours” “with
fire”
or “with fiery fire like unto lightning” “and
brimstone”
which means “burning sulfur”: “which
is”
or “that exists as” “the
second death”
which refers to “the other of two and after the first separation
whether natural or violent of the soul and the body by which the life
on earth is ended with the implied ideas of future misery in hell”.
John shared
how those who commit the “sins” listed above shall experience the
“second
death”
in the burning lake of “fire
and brimstone”.
When
we think through John's words in this verse, we should be saddened by
the plight of those who commit the sins listed by him. Anyone who has
committed or has thought to commit these “sins” has the “lake
of fire and brimstone”
as their destiny. There is an escape from this “second death”
which is provided by God through receiving His Son Jesus Christ as
“Savior and Lord”. God shall wipe away every sin committed and
thought of when a person yields their life to Him. All who read these
words are guilty of the “sins” listed above either in the
physical acts or in thought (remember “fearful, unbelieving” are
named among these as well). James the apostle wrote it this way, “For
whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point,
he is guilty of all”,
and those who are wise shall repent of their “sins”, ask God for
forgiveness and receive Jesus Christ today so the fate of the “lake
of fire”
shall never their own.
Next
time
John shares about,
“the Lamb's wife”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
