After
all the events of the tribulation period, the millennial reign of
Jesus and the “Great
White Throne”
judgment, John the apostle wrote, “And
I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the
first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John
saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven,
prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.” John
described the heavenly city as he wrote, “And
the building of the wall of it was of
jasper: and the city was
pure gold, like unto clear glass. And the foundations of the wall of
the city were
garnished with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation
was
jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an
emerald; The fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh,
chrysolite; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, a topaz; the tenth, a
chrysoprasus; the eleventh, a jacinth; the twelfth, an amethyst. And
the twelve gates were
twelve pearls; every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of
the city was
pure gold, as it were transparent glass. And I saw no temple therein:
for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it. And the
city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for
the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is
the light thereof. And the nations of them which are saved shall walk
in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory
and honor into it. And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by
day: for there shall be no night there. And they shall bring the
glory and honor of the nations into it. And there shall in no wise
enter into it any thing that defiles, neither whatsoever works
abomination, or makes a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's
book of life. And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear
as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. In
the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was
there
the tree of life, which bare twelve manner
of
fruits, and
yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were
for the healing of the nations. And there shall be no more curse: but
the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants
shall serve him: And they shall see his face; and his name shall
be
in their foreheads.”
In Revelation chapter twenty-two and verse five John shares how,
“there
shall be not night there; … for the Lord God gives them light”
where
we read:
And
there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light
of the sun;
for
the Lord God gives them light: and they shall reign for ever and
ever.
The
verse reads, “And
there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light
of the sun;”
John began with the words, “and
there shall be”
which means “and there will exist, come to pass, happen or follow”
“no
night there”
or “not any time when work ceases and moral stupidity and darkness
appear”; “and
they need”
which means “and those who live within the heavenly city will have
no necessity, duty or business for” “no
candle”
or “not a single portable lamp or candlestick”, “neither
light”
which means “nor will they have need of any illumination, emission
of brightness or manifestation”
“of the sun”
or “belonging to the sun in the sky”. John shared how there will
be no “night”
and no need “for a candle
or light from the sun”
in the heavenly city.
The
verse goes on to say, “
for the Lord God gives them light: and they shall reign for ever and
ever.”
John continued with the words, “for”
which means “because, since and on account that” “the
Lord”
or “the One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has
power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah”
“God”
which refers to “the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised
of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit” “gives”
which means “brings, illuminates, brightens up and enlightens”
“them”
or “the people within the heavenly city” “light”
which refers to “illumination and enlightenment”:
“and they shall reign”
or “the the people within the heavenly city will rule, exercise the
highest influence and power over and control” “for
ever and ever” which
refers to “from the unbroken age, perpetuity of time and eternity”.
John shared how God will provide all the illumination that is
necessary for those living within the heavenly city, and the promise
is that they shall rule for all eternity.
When
we think through John's words in this verse, we discover how
“night” will be no more, and the need for “light”
will be unnecessary because God will provide all the illumination
needed. God desires everyone to be a part of His “heavenly city”
through a relationship with His Son Jesus, and those submit their
lives to Him shall enjoy God's “light” and “reign”
for all eternity.
Next
time
we see John shares how “these
sayings are faithful and true”,
