The Measured Wall Revelation 21:17

After all the events of the tribulation period, the millennial reign of Jesus and the “Great White Throne” judgment, John the apostle wrote, “And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.” John added how God will wipe away all tears and allow no more death, sorrow, crying or pain”, and He is to make “all things new”. He also gave a warning to those who are “fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone: which is the second death”, and he continued, “And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come here, I will show your the bride, the Lamb's wife. And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal. And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel. On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates. And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. And the city lies foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth: and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal. ”, and in Revelation chapter twenty-one and verse seventeen John shares about, “the measured wall” where we read:

And he measured the wall thereof, an hundred and forty and four cubits,
according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel.
The verse reads, And he measured the wall thereof, an hundred and forty and four cubits, ... John began with the words, “and he measured” which means “and the angel with the golden measuring rod judged and meted out the space and distance of” “the wall thereof” or “the wall around the city”, “an hundred and forty and four cubits” or “one hundred and forty four measures of the length equal to the distance from the joint of the elbow to the tip of the middle finger or about eighteen inches”. John saw the “angel” measure the wall of the city and found it to be about two hundred and sixteen feet high.

The verse continues, “... according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel.” John added the words, “according to” which means “down from, throughout and ” “the measure” which means “the judged and meted out the space and distance” “of a man” or “belonging to a human being whether male or female”, “that is” which means “which exists”, “of the angel” or “pertaining to the messenger, envoy and one sent”. The measurement employed by the “angel” was the unit used by people.

When we think through John's words in this verse, we notice how high the “wall of the city” is. The walls of the city were about two hundred and sixteen feet high which towered over John who watched the “angel” measure it. God has a plan for His “heavenly city”, and this tall wall is indicative of His precise desire to have people follow after Him through His Son Jesus Christ. Many things, including this tall walled city, await those who submit their lives to Him.

Next time John shares how, “the building of the wall of it was of jasper, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
