Matthew
continued to share how there were three separate “fourteen
generations”
which were involved in Jesus' coming, and he referred to Jesus' birth
by the Holy Spirit and through Mary before she and Joseph “came
together”.
“Joseph”
was “not
willing to make”
Mary “a
public example, but while he thought on these things, behold, the
angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, you
son of David, fear not to take unto you Mary your wife: for that
which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost”,
and in chapter one and verse twenty-one of his book, Matthew shares
how the angel told Joseph, “she
shall bring forth a son, and you shall call his name Jesus” where
we read:
And
she shall bring forth a son, and you shall call his name JESUS:
for
he shall save his people from their sins.
The
verse reads, “And
she shall bring forth a son, and you shall call his name JESUS:”
Matthew began with the words, “and
she”
which means “Mary” “shall
bring forth”
or “will bear, produce and give birth to” “a
son”
or “a male offspring or descendant”, “and
you shall call”
which means “and Joseph was to salute, bear and give title and
bidding to” “his name”
or
“the son's everything which the name covers including the thought
or feeling of which is aroused in the mind by mentioning, hearing and
remembering” “Jesus”
which means “Jehovah is Salvation”. Matthew described how the
“angel”
instructed Joseph not only concerning Mary having a “son”, but
also the specific “name”,
“Jesus”,
which this son was to receive.
The
verse continues, “for
he shall save his people from their sins.”
Matthew added the words, “for
he shall save”
which means “because Jesus will keep safe and sound, rescue from
danger or destruction, heal and preserve” “his
people” or
“Jesus' group, tribe, nation and all those who are of the same
stock and language” “from
their sins”
which means “separate and away from the people's errors, mistakes,
offenses and violations of the divine law”.
The
“angel”
gave the specific reason this “son”
was to be “named”
“Jesus”
because He would “rescue and heal” “people”
from their sinful ways.
When
we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see how God's plan
for His Son Jesus to be born was thought of well in advance of His
birth. God desired to “save”
people from their “sins”, and He sent His Son to be born by Mary
and specifically “named” “Jehovah is salvation”. God knew
man's separation from Him would hurt them for all eternity, and from
Genesis chapter three and verse fifteen which says, “And
I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed
and her seed; it shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his
heel”, until Jesus' birth, God's plan was to “save” people.
Let all who read these words consider the awesome plan of God to
“save” them, and may they yield their lives to this loving
“Savior” God today.
Next
time Matthew shares how the angel told Joseph, “this
was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
