In the book of Joshua, we learned how, “the children of Israel gave by lot unto the Levites these cities with their suburbs, as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses, and they gave out of the tribe of the children of Judah, and out of the tribe of the children of Simeon, these cities which are here mentioned by name. Which the children of Aaron, being of the families of the Kohathites, who were of the children of Levi, had: for theirs was the first lot. And they gave them the city of Arba the father of Anak, which city is Hebron, in the hill country of Judah, with the suburbs thereof round about it”, and in chapter twenty-one and verse twelve of Joshua we learn how, “the fields of the city, and the villages thereof, gave they to Caleb” where we read,
But the fields of the city, and the villages thereof,
gave they to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for his possession.
The verse reads, “But the fields of the city, and the villages thereof, …” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “but the fields of the city” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover the cultivated land or plains belonging to the dwelling place or place of wakening”, “and the villages thereof” or “and the settled abodes and towns within the mountainous area of Arba” were given to the following. Joshua or the writer shared how the cultivated lands and plains of “Arba” were provided to the following.
The verse goes on to say, “… gave they to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for his possession.” Joshua or the writer continued with the words, “gave they to Caleb” which means “granted, bestowed and assigned they, the people of Israel, to Caleb whose name means ‘dog’ and was the godly son of Jephunneh and the faithful spy who reported the Promised Land favorably and urged its capture” “the son of Jephunneh” or “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Jephunneh whose name means ‘he will be facing’ and was a Kenezite and father of Caleb the spy from the tribe of Judah” “for his possession” which means “on behalf of his, Caleb’s, property or land”. Joshua or the writer said the “fields and villages” were granted to “Jephunneh’s son Caleb” as his property.
When we consider the words in this verse, we discover how “Caleb” was provided with the cultivated land of the dwelling place and settled abode of “Arba”. “Caleb” received the territory promised to him by Joshua, and his inheritance was within the land of the giants. (See Joshua 14:6-13) God loves to provide for His people, and when we yield our lives to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead after three days, He will provide forgiveness of sins, eternal life and His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and give us the ability to live within that truth so our lives bear witness of Him wherever He places us within the world. (See John 3:16: 16:13: Acts 1:8; Revelation 4:11)
