Paul
the apostle shared with the church members in Corinth, “For
though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh,
because “(the weapons of our
warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of
strong holds;)”
In chapter
ten and verse five of Second Corinthians, Paul shares how the
“weapons of our warfare”
are, “casting down imaginations, and every
high thing that exalts itself”
with them where we read:
Casting
down imaginations, and every high thing that exalts itself against
the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to
the obedience of Christ;
The verse begins, “Casting
down imaginations, and every high thing that exalts itself against
the knowledge of God, ...”
Paul began with the words, “casting
down”
which means “taking down with the use of force or demolish”
“imaginations” or
“reckoning, computation, reasoning, judgment or decision”, “and
every high thing”
which means “and each, all, the whole and everyone of the elevated
barrier, rampart and bulwark” “that
exalts itself”
or “that lifts and raises on high” “against”
or “down from, through out, according to, toward and along” “the
knowledge”
which means “the deeper more perfect and enlarged knowledge of this
religion such as belongs to the more advanced especially of things
lawful and unlawful for Christians” “of
God” which
refers to “the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God
the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”. Paul showed how
“spiritual weapons” “demolish computations and reason” which
“exalt” themselves above the “knowledge
of God”.
The verse continues, “...
and bringing into captivity every thought to
the obedience of Christ;” Paul continued
with the words, “and bringing into
captivity”
which means “capturing and captivating” “every
thought” or
“each, all, the whole and everyone of the thoughts” “to
the obedience” which
means “to the compliance and submission” “of
Christ” or
“of the anointed One, the Messiah and the Son of God”. Paul
showed how spiritual “weapons”
“capture” “each and every” “thought”
and make them “subject to”
Jesus Christ.
When we meditate upon
these words of Paul, we see how
powerful God's spiritual “weapons”
are. When Christians employ the use of them, “imaginations,
every high thing and every thought”
must submit to their power. Jesus Christ came not only to save us
from the power of sin, but also to equip us with the “instruments”
that help us “defeat” wicked onslaughts. Let us take note of
Paul's encouraging words concerning our “spiritual weapons”, and
may we “cast down imaginations, high things and thoughts”
that are in opposition to God.
Next
time we
see Paul tells
the
church members, “a
readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is
fulfilled”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then,
Until
tomorrow…there is more…
