Paul
the apostle shared with the church members in Corinth when it comes
to giving he and his companions, “mean
not that other men be eased, and you burdened”,
and in chapter
eight and verse fourteen of Second Corinthians, Paul wrote how there
should be, “an equality”
where we read:
But by an equality, that now at this time your
abundance may be a supply for their want, that their abundance also
may be a supply for your want: that there may be equality:
The
verse begins, “But
by an equality, that now at this time your abundance may be a supply
for their want, ...”
Paul began with the word, “but”
which is a disassociation conjunction that means what is about to be
written takes precedence over what was just stated “by
an equality” or
“by fairness and what is equitable”, “that
now” which
refers to “so at this present time and moment” “at
this time”
which means “due measure, hence, opportune, seasonal and a larger
or smaller portion of time” “your
abundance”
or “the church members' residue, remains and what is left over”
“may be a supply”
which means “toward and intent and purpose” “for
their want”
or “for the Macedonians' lack, poverty, deficiency and
destitution”. Paul wanted the church
members to give of their “abundance”
so others “lack” should be provided.
The verse continues, “...
that their abundance also may be a supply for your want: that there
may be equality:”
Paul added the words, “that their abundance”
which means “the Macedonians' residue, remains and what is left
over” “also”
which means “even as and indeed” “be
a supply”
or “be toward and intent and purpose” “for
your want”
which means “for the church members' lack, poverty, deficiency and
destitution”: “that there may be”
or “so there would become, come into existence, come to pass and
happen” “equality”
or “fairness and what is equitable”. Paul knew there would be
times where the Macedonian churches would be able to supply the
Corinthian church members' “lack” and when they did so, there
would be “equality” between
them.
When we meditate upon
these words of Paul, we see his care that “equality” in
giving be among the churches. There were times when one church had
more abundant supply than others, and they were to “share their
supply” so that no one lacked. Churches demonstrate a Christ like
attitude when they care for one another in this manner, and let us
allow the Lord Jesus to help us know His idea about “giving” and
implement it when we see opportunity to do so.
Next
time Paul shares about, “”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then,
Until
tomorrow…there is more…
