Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus road into Jerusalem on a donkey, and “a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way”, and in chapter twenty-one and verse nine of his book, Matthew shares how the multitudes cried, “Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord” where we read:
And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.
The verse reads, “And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David”. Matthew began with the words, “and the multitudes” or “and the great and large crowd of people” “that went before” which means “who preceded and lead Jesus”, “and that followed” or “and the people who came after and behind Jesus”, “cried” which means “vociferated and spoke in a loud voice”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”, “Hosanna” which is an “exclamation of adoration that means oh save and be propitious” “to the Son of David” or “to the offspring and descendant of David the King”. Matthew shared how the large crowd of people went ahead of and behind Jesus upon the donkey and “cried out” “Save now” “David's Son”.
The verse goes on to say, “Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.” Matthew added the word, “blessed” or “praised, celebrated, prosperous, favored of God and oh how happy” “is he” which means “is the one” “that comes” or “who arrives, arises and finds place” “in the name” which means “in that which is used for everything which the name covers including everything the thought or feeling of which is aroused in the mind by mentioning, hearing and remembering” “of the Lord” or “belonging to the one to whom a person or thing belongs about which he has power of deciding, master and the title given to God the Messiah”; “Hosanna” which means “oh save and be propitious” “in the highest” or “in the most high rank”. Matthew wrote how the people “cried out” “Save now” One who is in the “most high rank”.
When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how the people acknowledged Jesus as the One who could save them. The multitude needed rescue, and they recognized Jesus as being the One who could do so. God desires for every person to understand Jesus is the “Savior and Lord” of the world and is the only One who is able to save it. Let all who read these words join the “cry” of the multitude on this day of Jesus' “triumphal entry” and shout aloud “Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.”
Next time Matthew shares how, “all the city was moved” when Jesus entered Jerusalem, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
