The Death of a Man with No Children - Matthew 22:24

Matthew the apostle wrote, “The same day came to him the Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection, and asked him”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse twenty-four of his book Matthew shared how the Sadducees asked, “Master, Moses said, if a man die, having no children” where we read:

Saying, Master, Moses said, If a man die, having no children,

his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.

The verse reads, Saying, Master, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, ...” Matthew began with the word, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”, “Master” which means “teacher or one who teaches the things of God and the duties of man”, “Moses said” or “Moses whose name means “drawing out” and was the legislator of the Jewish people and in a certain sense the founder of the Jewish religion uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “If a man die” or “whether and in case a person whether male or female who has perished, is deceased and breathed their last”, “having no children” which means “without producing and possessing sons and daughters”. Matthew shared how the “Sadducees” began their question by referencing “Moses” and presenting the circumstance where a “man” breathed his last and fathered “no children” before He died.

The verse goes on to say, “... his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.” Matthew continued with the words, “his brother” which means “the brother of the man who died” “shall marry his wife” or “is to marry the dead man's wife”, “and raise up” which means “and rise up, bear and lift up” “seed” or “the germ of the next generation” “unto his brother” which means “for his brother who died”. Matthew shared how the “Sadducees” continued their conditional story by presenting the idea of a “brother” marrying the “wife” of his dead brother and produce a child heir through her.

When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see the “Sadducees” presenting a situation to Jesus that was according to “Moses' law”. When a man died without a child, his brother was to marry his widow and raise up a child in his name so his name would continue. (See Genesis 38) This idea would keep the heritage of the dead man alive, and his family lineage would not be broken through death. God desires a “perpetual relationship” with every person through His Son Jesus, and those who yield their lives to Him as “Savior and Lord” shall know the eternal benefit to aligning themselves with God's plan of “salvation”.

Next time Matthew wrote how the “Sadducees” continued to ask Jesus a question by saying, “there were with us seven brethren, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
