No Wedding Garment - Matthew 22:11

Matthew the apostle wrote how, “Jesus answered and spoke unto” the chief priests and elders in Jerusalem” “again by parables, and said, The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son, And sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come. Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage. But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise. And the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew them. But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth: and he sent forth his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city. Then said he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy. Go you therefore into the highways, and as many as you shall find, bid to the marriage. So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse eleven of his book Matthew shared how Jesus said the king saw, “a man which had not on a wedding garment” where we read:

And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment:

The verse reads, And when the king came in to see the guests, ...” Matthew began with the words, “and when” which means “and at the time and moment” “the king came in or “the leader of the people, prince, commander and lord of the land appeared and made entrance” “to see the guests” or “to observe, behold, look upon and view attentively the people who accepted the invitation of the king to come to the wedding”. Matthew shared how Jesus said at this time the “king” entered his “wedding feast” to observe the people who came.

The verse goes on to say, “... he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment:” Matthew continued with the words, “he saw there a man” which means “the king observed, beheld, looked upon and vied attentively a particular male human being” “which had not on” or “who was not wearing, adorned or clothed with” “a wedding garment” or “a matrimonial raiment, cloak or outer garment”. Matthew wrote how Jesus said the king perceived there was a “man” at the “wedding feast” who was not “clothed” in “wedding attire”.

When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how the king wanted to know who came to his “wedding feast”. As he was looking around, the king took special note of one man who was not wearing the appropriate “wedding attire”. We might think this interesting because we are not used to the custom of wearing a particular wedding garment which more than likely would have been provided as the guests arrived. God Almighty has provided “raiment” for the “wedding” in heaven through His Son Jesus, and when a person receives Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they receive the appropriate “wedding attire” necessary to attend the “marriage supper of the Lamb”.

Next time Matthew shares how Jesus told how the king asked, “how did you come here not having a wedding garment?, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
