Jesus Questions the Pharisees - Matthew 22:41

Matthew the apostle wrote, when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together. Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse forty-one of his book Matthew shared how Jesus questioned “the Pharisees” where we read:

While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,

The verse reads, While the Pharisees were gathered together, ...” Matthew began with the word, “while” which means “moreover, when and as“the Pharisees” which means “the sect that seems to have started after the Jewish exile. In addition to Old Testament books the Pharisees recognised in oral tradition a standard of belief and life” “were gathered together” or “were assembled and drawn together”. Matthew shared how Jesus took advantage of the assembling of the religious leaders known as “the Pharisees”.

The verse goes on to say, “... Jesus asked them, ...”. Matthew added the word, “Jesus” which refers to “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” “asked them” which means “questioned, demanded and desired an answer from the Pharisees”. Matthew shared how Jesus began to question the Pharisees.

When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus knew this was an opportunity to question the religious leaders who questioned Him. God wants people to “seek” Him, and if they are sincere, they shall find His Son Jesus Christ as the Messiah and Lord. Those who “question” Him should expect to be “questioned” themselves, and should they be willing to submit themselves to Him as their “Savior and Lord”, they shall receive “everlasting life” with God who has all the answers.

Next time Matthew wrote how Jesus asked, “What do you think of Christ?, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
