Whose Wife Shall She Be? - Matthew 22:28

Matthew the apostle wrote, “The same day came to him the Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection, and asked him. Saying, Master, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no issue, left his wife unto his brother: Likewise the second also, and the third, unto the seventh. And last of all the woman died also”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse twenty-eight of his book Matthew shared how the Sadducees asked Jesus, “whose wife shall she be of the seven?” where we read:

Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her.

The verse reads, Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? Matthew began with the word, “therefore” or “wherefore, then, accordingly, consequently and these things being so“in the resurrection” which means “in the raising and rising from the dead” “whose wife” or “which one's married woman” “shall she be” which means “will the woman who was married and became a widow” “of the seven” which refers to “the seven brothers”? Matthew shared how the “Sadducees” wanted Jesus to answer which of the “seven brothers” would be married to this woman in the “rising of the dead”.

The verse goes on to say, for they all had her.” Matthew continued with the word, “for” which means “because, since and on account that” “they all” or “every one of the seven brother” “had her” which refers to “were married to the woman”. Matthew shared how the “Sadducees” reasoned that all “seven brothers” were married to this woman and this would present a difficult situation under normal circumstances.

When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see the real question the “Sadducees” had for Jesus. Since they did not believe in the “resurrection”, they presented a problem they thought would give Jesus difficulty. They knew Jesus believed in the “resurrection”, and if they could persuade Him to answer their question or “ensnare” Him with it, they would discredit Him. God loves everyone, and His desire is to “save” and provide “everlasting life” to them. Though a person may have questions that are meant to “ensnare” Him, Jesus still desires that they “come unto” Him.

Next time Matthew wrote how Jesus said, “you do err, not knowing the scriptures, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
