Matthew the apostle wrote, “when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together. Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, ...”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse forty-two of his book Matthew shared how Jesus continued by asking, “what think you of Christ?” where we read:
Saying, What think you of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David.
The verse reads, “Saying, What think you of Christ? whose son is he?” Matthew began with the word, “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming” “what think you” which means “what was the Pharisees opinion, accounting and judgment” “of Christ” or “pertaining to the anointed One and Messiah”? “whose son” which means “whose descendant or offspring” “is he” which refers to “the Christ”. Matthew shared how Jesus wanted the Pharisees to give their opinion of the genealogy of the Messiah.
The verse continues, “They say unto him, The Son of David.”. Matthew added the words, “they say” which means “the Pharisees uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto him” or “to Jesus”, “The Son of David” which refers to “the offspring and progeny of David the King of Israel”. Matthew shared how the Pharisees answered Jesus by declaring that the Messiah would be a “Son” or “offspring” of “King David” of Israel.
When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus questioned the Pharisees concerning the “ancestry” of the Messiah. Their answer was that He was to be a “descendant” from “King David” of Israel. They answered correctly, and Jesus shall have an additional question for them related to their answer. Suffice it for now to realize Jesus as the Messiah fulfilled that requirement. Jesus is the Christ of Israel who descended from the lineage of “King David”, and those who are wise shall understand not only that He fulfilled this “Messianic” prophecy, but also came to save people from their sins and provide them with “everlasting life”.
Next time Matthew wrote how Jesus asked, “How then does David in spirit call him Lord”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
