Matthew the apostle wrote how, “the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle” Jesus “in his talk. Tell us therefore, What do you think? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not? But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why do you tempt me, you hypocrites? Show me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny. And he said unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? They say unto him, Caesar's. Then said he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse twenty-two of his book Matthew shared how the students of the Pharisees, “marvel” at Jesus where we read:
When they had heard these words, they marveled, and left him, and went their way.
The verse reads, “When they had heard these words, they marveled, ...” Matthew began with the word, “when” which means “at that time and moment” “they had heard” which means “the disciples of Pharisees were given the faculty of hearing, discerning and understanding” “these words” or “Jesus' sayings and remarks”, “they marveled” or “the Pharisees' wondered in admiration”. Matthew shared how the disciples of the Pharisees “wondered in admiration” after they understood Jesus' answer to them.
The verse goes on to say, “... and left him, and went their way.” Matthew continued with the words, “and left him” which means “and went forth and departed from Jesus”, “and went” or “and left to go” “their way” which means “the students of the Pharisees own way”. Matthew shared how the Pharisee's disciples left Jesus and traveled their own way.
When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see how the Pharisee's students were “amazed” by Jesus' answer and they left Him. This will be the response of any person who truly examines the words of Jesus Christ, and when they discover He came to “seek and to save that which was lost”, they should yield their lives to Him as their “Savior and Lord” to live eternally with Him.
Next time Matthew wrote, “the same day came unto him the Sadducees”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
