Matthew the apostle wrote how, “when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that” Jesus “did, and the children crying in the temple, and saying, Hosanna to the Son of David; they were sore displeased, And said unto him, Do you Hear what these say? And Jesus said unto them, Yes; have you never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings you have perfected praise? And he left them, and went out of the city into Bethany; and he lodged there”, and in chapter twenty-one and verse eighteen of his book, Matthew shares how Jesus was, “hungry” where we read:
Now in the morning as he returned into the city, he hungered.
The verse reads, “Now in the morning as he returned into the city,” Matthew began with the word, “now” or “moreover and” “in the morning” which means “at day break and early in the day” “as he returned” or “as Jesus was going back” “into the city” which means “into Jerusalem”. Matthew shared how Jesus went back to the city of Jerusalem after staying overnight in the village of Bethany.
The verse continues, “... he hungered.” Matthew added the words, “he hungered” which means “Jesus began to crave food ardently and with eager desire. Matthew wrote how Jesus was “hungry” as He returned to Jerusalem.
When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see the resilience of Jesus to return to Jerusalem after His latest confrontation with the religious leaders, and we also see His humanity. Jesus is the “Creator” of all things, and this includes Jerusalem, and He was the one who made “hunger” to be in man. God desires to have a relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and by demonstrating His determination to go back into Jerusalem, and revealing His hunger, we understand His passion to be the “Savior and Lord” of all who yield their lives to Him.
Next time Matthew shares how Jesus was, “saw a fig tree in the way … and found nothing thereon”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
