Matthew the apostle wrote how, “Jesus answered and spoke unto” the chief priests and elders in Jerusalem” “again by parables, and said, The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son, And sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come. Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage. But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise. And the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew them. But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth: and he sent forth his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city. Then said he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy. Go you therefore into the highways, and as many as you shall find, bid to the marriage. So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests. And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse twelve of his book Jesus told how the king questioned, “friend, how came you in here not having a wedding garment” where we read:
And he said unto him, Friend, how came you in here not having a wedding garment?
And he was speechless.
The verse reads, “And he said unto him, Friend, how came you in here not having a wedding garment?” Matthew began with the words, “and he said” which means “and the king uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto him” or “to the man who was not wearing a wedding garment”, “Friend” or “comrade, mate, partner or fellow friend”, “how came you in here” or “in what way did you enter the wedding feast” “not having a wedding garment” which means “without being clothed with a matrimonial raiment, cloak or outer garment”? Matthew shared how Jesus said the king questioned the man who entered the “wedding feast” without wearing a “wedding garment”.
The verse continues, “And he was speechless.” Matthew added the words, “and he was speechless” which means “ant the man without a wedding garment could not answer or respond to the king”. Matthew wrote how Jesus said the man who was questioned by the “king” could not respond to the king's question.
When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see how the king began to question the man who was not wearing a “wedding garment”. The fact that the king not only noticed he was not wearing the appropriate attire, but he inquired as to why this man was not dressed the way he should be. This caused the man to fail to answer the king's question, and now there was a standoff between the king and the guest with no “wedding garment”. God has His way of entrance into the “wedding feast” for His Son Jesus, and those who receive Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” shall be clothed in “robes of righteousness” which are the only garments acceptable to God. (See Revelation 7:9). Those who are wise shall yield their lives to Jesus today and be assured they shall be clothed in the appropriate attire when the “wedding feast” for Jesus is held.
Next time Matthew shares how Jesus told how the king told his servants, “bind him hand and foot, and take him away”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
