Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus asked the chief priests and the elders of Jerusalem, “Hear another parable: There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and dug a wine-press in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country. And when the time of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive the fruits of it. And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another. Again, he sent other servants more than the first: and they did unto them likewise. But last of all he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son. But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance. And they caught him, and cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him. When the lord therefore of the vineyard comes, what will he do unto those husbandmen? They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons”, and in chapter twenty-one and verse forty-two of his book, Matthew shares how Jesus asked if the chief priests and elders in Jerusalem if they ever read, “the stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner” where we read:
Jesus said unto them, Did you never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes?
The verse reads, “Jesus said unto them, Did you never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner:” Matthew began with the words, “Jesus said” which means “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto them” or “to the chief priests and elders in Jerusalem”, “Did you never read” which means “did the chief priests and elders distinguish between, recognize, know accurately and acknowledge” “in the scriptures” which means “within the Holy Scripture or Holy writ”, “The stone” or “the primary building stone” “which the builders” which refers to “that the constructors” “rejected” or “disapproved, rejected and repudiated”, “the same” which means “that same primary stone” “is become” or “has come into existence, began to be, arose and appeared as” “the head” which means “the capital, extreme and chief” “of the corner” or “pertaining to the corner or quarter”. Matthew shared how Jesus referred to the scripture found in the book of Psalms chapter one hundred eighteen and verse twenty-two where it says, “The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner” as He questioned the “chief priests and elders in Jerusalem” as to whether they ever read and understood those words.
The verse continues, “... this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes?” Matthew added the words, “this is the Lord's doing” which means “this is the arising and appearing of the One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master, and the title given to God the Messiah”, “and it is marvelous” which means “it is wonderful, worthy of pious admiration and excellent” “in our eyes” or “in the eyes of those who behold it”? Matthew wrote how Jesus continued His question to the “chief priests and elders” by quoting more scripture as He referred to Psalm chapter one hundred eighteen and verse twenty-three where it says, “This is the LORD'S doing; it is marvelous in our eyes”.
When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus confronted “the chief priests and elders” with the Holy Scriptures as He asked them whether they read them or not. Jesus had a plan to challenge the “chief priests and elders” in their thinking, and whenever the Son of God takes a position the only wise choice is to align with Him. God desires for everyone to receive His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, and when they have read the scriptures thoroughly, they shall find He is the “chief cornerstone” through whom every person must come to God.
Next time Matthew writes how Jesus tells the chief priests and elders, “The kingdom of God shall be taken from you”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
