Matthew the apostle wrote how, “Jesus answered and spoke unto” the chief priests and elders in Jerusalem” “again by parables, and said, The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son, And sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come. Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage. But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse six of his book Jesus told how, “the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully” where we read:
And the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew them.
The verse reads, “And the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, ...” Matthew began with the words, “and the remnant” which means “and the rest of the invited servants” “took his servants” or “took the king's bondmen and men of servile work”, “and entreated them spitefully” or “behaved insolently, wantonly, outrageously and shamefully toward the king's servants”. Matthew shared how the “rest of the servants who were invited” to the king's wedding feast treated the servants he sent to invite them “shamefully and outrageously”.
The verse continues, “... and slew them.” Matthew added the words, “and slew them” which means “and killed, extinguished, abolished the servants sent by the king and inflicted with mortal death”. Matthew wrote how the invited “servants” not only treated the “bondmen of the king” who were sent to invite them to the wedding feast badly, but they also “killed” them.
When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see the unbelievable response of these “invited servants” toward those who were sent to invite them. They abused some of them and killed others. God's invitation is to every person through His Son Jesus, however, some people reject His offer and abuse and “kill” the servant messengers sent to them. This behavior is similar to the way Jesus was “abused and killed”, and those who are wise will examine this story closely and understand God desires everyone to yield their lives to Him and never abuse His servants who share the invitation of Jesus.
Next time Matthew shares how Jesus said, “when the king heard thereof, he was wroth”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
