Neither Married or Given in Marriage - Matthew 22:30

Matthew the apostle wrote how the “Sadducees” desired to know Jesus' answer to which of seven brothers would be married to a woman who was widowed one by one to them all, and Jesus answered and said unto them, You do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse thirty of his book Matthew shared how Jesus said, “in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage” where we read:

For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage,

but are as the angels of God in heaven.

The verse reads, For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, ...” Matthew began with the word, “for” or “because, since, on account of and consequently“in the resurrection” which means “within the raising and rising from the dead” “they neither marry” or “people who are risen from the dead do not get married”, “nor are given in marriage” which means “not and in no way are the resurrected granted or presented in marriage”. Matthew shared how Jesus told the “Sadducees” people who are “risen from the dead” do not “marry” nor do they grant “marriage” to anyone.

The verse goes on to say, “... but are as the angels of God in heaven.” Matthew added the word, “but” which means “nevertheless, moreover and” “are as the angels or “those who are risen from the dead are similar and in likeness to the spiritual messengers” “of God” which refers to “to the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit” “in heaven” which means “in the region above the sidereal heavens, the seat of order of things eternal and consummately perfect where God dwells and other heavenly beings”. Matthew shared how Jesus told the “Sadducees” those who are “risen from the dead” are like God's “spiritual messengers” who dwell in “heaven”.

When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see why the “Sadducees'” story fell short in the attempt to “ensnare” Jesus. The “Sadducees” assumed people were “married” after they rose from the dead, and Jesus informed them of their “error” because people are like God's “angels” in heaven after they are raised from the dead. God's desire is for people to live with Him forever, and those who “believe and trust” in His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” shall receive “everlasting life”. The relationships in “heaven” will be superior to every relationship upon the earth, and Jesus verified there will be a “resurrection” from the dead by His explanation concerning “marriage” in “heaven”.

Next time Matthew wrote how Jesus refers to, “the resurrection of the dead, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
