Matthew the apostle wrote, “The same day came to” Jesus “the Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection, and asked him. Saying, Master, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no issue, left his wife unto his brother: Likewise the second also, and the third, unto the seventh. And last of all the woman died also. Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse twenty-nine of his book Matthew shared how Jesus answered, “you do err, not knowing the scriptures” where we read:
Jesus answered and said unto them, You do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.
The verse reads, “Jesus answered and said unto them, You do err, ...” Matthew began with the word, “Jesus” or “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” “answered” which means “responded and began to speak” “and said unto them” or “and uttered, declared and proclaimed to the Sadducees”, “you do err” which means “the Sadducees are lead astray, roaming about, deceived and in error”. Matthew shared how Jesus told the “Sadducees” they were in error in their thinking.
The verse continues, “... not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.” Matthew added the words, “not knowing” which means “never and in no way perceiving, noticing, discerning and discovering” “the scriptures” or “the written Holy writ”, “nor the power” which means “not and in no way the strength, ability and influence” “of God” which belongs to “the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”. Matthew shared how Jesus told the “Sadducees” they were in “error” was because they did not “know” God's word nor His “power”.
When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we discover Jesus' wonderful ability to respond to the “Sadducees” who were attempting to “ensnare” Him with another story. This time, Jesus employed the idea of “knowing God's word and power” which was unknown by the “Sadducees”. Though they read and studied the Holy scriptures, they did not discover God's ways or His ability which is shown in them. God wants every person to be in a relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and when they yield their lives to Him as “Savior and Lord”, they shall learn and discover the “ways of God” and His “power” which demonstrated over and over again in God's Holy word.
Next time Matthew wrote how Jesus said, “in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
