Matthew the apostle wrote, “The same day came to him the Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection, and asked him. Saying, Master, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse twenty-five of his book Matthew shared how the Sadducees asked, “there were with us seven brethren” where we read:
Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first, when he had married a wife,
deceased, and, having no issue, left his wife unto his brother:
The verse reads, “Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first, when he had married a wife, ...” Matthew began with the words, “now there were with us” or “moreover and there existed with the Sadducees” “seven brethren” or “seven brothers”: “and the first” or “the first brother”, “when” which means “at the time and moment” “he had married a wife” or “the first brother married a woman”. Matthew shared how the “Sadducees” continued their story by presenting a specific “first brother” who married to a woman.
The verse continues, “... deceased, and, having no issue, left his wife unto his brother:” Matthew added the word, “deceased” which means “breathed his last, died or expired”, “and, having no issue” or “and this first brother did not have any offspring or children”, “left his wife” which means “the deceased man's widow was left behind” “unto his brother” or “to marry the deceased man's brother”. Matthew shared how the “Sadducees” said this “first brother” died without having any children, and his widow was left to his “brother”.
When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see the continuance of the story by these “Sadducees”. Their presentation to Jesus was the first of “seven brothers” married a woman but did not produce any children before he died. This meant his brother was to take up his place and produce a child through his widow which would continue the “first brother's” name. God desires there to be a relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and when they align themselves with His plan by receiving Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they shall live eternally with God regardless of their situation on earth.
Next time Matthew wrote how the “Sadducees” continued to ask Jesus a question by saying, “likewise the second also, and the third, unto the seventh”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
