Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus asked the chief priests and the elders of Jerusalem, “Did you never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes? Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof. And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder. And when the chief priests and Pharisees had heard his parables, they perceived that he spoke of them. But when they sought to lay hands on him, they feared the multitude, because they took him for a prophet”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse one of his book, Matthew shares how Jesus, “answered and spoke unto them again by parables” where we read:
And Jesus answered and spoke unto them again by parables, and said,
The verse reads, “And Jesus answered and spoke unto them again ...” Matthew began with the words, “and Jesus” which refers to “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” “answered” or “began to speak and responded” “and spoke” which means “and said” “unto them again” or “to the chief priests and elders in Jerusalem another time”. Matthew shared how Jesus began to share another story with the “chief priests and elders in Jerusalem”.
The verse goes on to say, “... by parables, and said,” Matthew continued with the words, “by parables” which means “through earthly stories with heavenly meanings”, “and said” which means “and uttered, declared and proclaimed”. Matthew wrote how Jesus used “parables” again to illustrate His heavenly ideas.
When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see yet another time where Jesus is telling an “earthly story” that shares “heavenly ideas”. He resorted to these often, and any time we see one, we should pay particular attention to what He has to say. God wants every person to be in a loving relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and when Jesus shares His “parables”, all who are wise will carefully listen and receive the lesson He had in mind.
Next time Matthew shares how Jesus says, “the kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
