Matthew the apostle wrote how, “Jesus answered and spoke unto” the chief priests and elders in Jerusalem” “again by parables, and said, The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son, And sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come. Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage. But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise. And the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew them. But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth: and he sent forth his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse eight of his book Matthew shared how Jesus said the king declared, “they which were bidden were not worthy” where we read:
Then said he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy.
The verse reads, “Then said he to his servants, The wedding is ready, ...” Matthew began with the words, “then said he” which means “then uttered, declared and proclaimed the king” “to his servants” or “to his bondmen and men of servile condition”, “The wedding” which means “the marriage festival and feast” “is ready” or “is prepared”. Matthew shared how Jesus said the king declared his “wedding feast” was already prepared.
The verse continues, “... but they which were bidden were not worthy.” Matthew added the word, “but” which means “nevertheless, nonetheless, moreover and” “they which were bidden” or “the servants who were invited to come to the wedding feast” “were not worthy” or “were not befitting, congruous, of value or merit”. Matthew wrote how the king declared the initial servants who were invited to his “wedding feast” were not “befitting” as guest to the marriage festival.
When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus shared the king's assessment of those who rejected his invitation and made excuses for not attending his son's “wedding feast”. God has invited everyone to be a part of His kingdom through His Son Jesus, and those who accept His invitation shall be deemed “worthy” to attend. All others shall be rejected by Him and be assessed as of no “value or merit” to attend the marriage “feast” of the living God.
Next time Matthew shares how Jesus told how the king said, “go you therefore into the highways”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
