After Jesus' disciples fled from Him in the Garden of Gethsemane, Matthew the apostle wrote, “they that had laid hold on Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled. But Peter followed him afar off unto the high priest's palace, and went in, and sat with the servants, to see the end. Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death. But found none: yes, though many false witnesses came, yet found they none. At the last came two false witnesses. And said, This fellow said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days. And the high priest arose, and said unto him, Answer you nothing? what is it which these witness against you? But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure you by the living God, that you tell us whether you be the Christ, the Son of God”, and in chapter twenty-six and verse sixty-four of his book, Matthew wrote how Jesus declared, “you have said” where we read:
Jesus said unto him, You have said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall you see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.
The verse reads, “Jesus said unto him, You have said:” Matthew began words, “Jesus said” which means “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto him” or “to the high priest”, “you have said” which means “you have uttered, declared and proclaimed that Jesus is the Christ”. Matthew shared how Jesus confirmed that He was the “Christ” as the “high priest” wanted Him to declare.
The verse continues, “nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall you see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.” Matthew added the word, “nevertheless” or “moreover, besides, notwithstanding and albeit” “I say” which means “Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto you” or “to the high priest”, “Hereafter” or “just now, at this moment and at this very time” “you shall see” which means “the high priest would discover, discern, notice and behold” “the Son of man” or “Jesus the Son of God” “sitting on the right hand of power” which means “being seated at God's place of honor and authority”, “and coming” or “appearing before the public” “in the clouds of heaven” or “within the vaulted expanse of the sky with all things visible in it”. Matthew shared how Jesus continued to share not only was He the “Christ”, but after the imminent events which would cause His death, the “high priest” would see Him seated at the right hand of God and “coming” in the “clouds of heaven”.
When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see Jesus further confirm that He is the Messiah of God. Jesus came to the earth to save men from the penalty of sin which is death, and by going through this “trial, torture and eventual death”, He paid for the sins of the whole world. Those who are wise will note Jesus' words and be among those who see Him at God's “right hand of power” and “coming in the clouds of heaven”.
Next time Matthew shares how, “the high priest rent his clothes”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
