Matthew the apostle wrote as Jesus and His disciples, “All of you shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad. But after I am risen again, I will go before you into Galilee. Peter answered and said unto him, Though all men shall be offended because of you, yet will I never be offended. Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto you, That this night, before the cock crow, you shall deny me three times. Peter said unto him, Though I should die with you, yet will I not deny you. Likewise also said all the disciples”, and in chapter twenty-six and verse thirty-six of his book, Matthew writes how Jesus and His disciples came, “unto a place called Gethsemane” where we read:
Then comes Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane,
and said unto the disciples, Sit you here, while I go and pray yonder.
The verse reads, “Then comes Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, ...” Matthew began words, “Then comes” which means “at that time and moment appeared and came forth” “Jesus” which refers to “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” “with them” which means “alongside the disciples” “unto a place” or “to a piece of ground and land” “called Gethsemane” or “named Gethsemane which means an oil press and is the name of a place at the foot of the Mount of Olive beyond the torrent Kidron”. Matthew shared how Jesus went with His “disciples” to the garden place named “Gethsemane” or “the oil press”.
The verse goes on to say, “... and said unto the disciples, Sit you here, while I go and pray yonder.” Matthew continued with the words, “and said” which means “and uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto the disciples” or “”to Jesus' students, pupils and attendants, “Sit you here” which means “the disciples were to be seated, fixed, put and established in a certain spot”, “while I go” or “during the time Jesus proceeds” “and pray yonder” which means “and supplicate, worship and make earnest prayer there or in that place”. Matthew shared how Jesus told His “disciples” to be seated in a particular place in the “garden of Gethsemane” while He went a little further ahead to “call out to His Father” in prayer.
When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see the beginning of one of the most awing events in the Bible. Jesus proceeds with His disciples to “the Garden of Gethsemane” or “the oil press” where He would call out to His Father to ask for any other way that mankind might be saved other than His going to the cross. We shall see more of Jesus' time in “Gethsemane” in the next few verses, but suffice it for now to know that Jesus is entering the time of great sorrow of soul and mind because His desire was to “save” every person. God loves people, and everyone who reads these words should pay particular attention to Jesus' sacrifice so they might have “everlasting life” with Him.
Next time Matthew shares how Jesus, “took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
