Matthew the apostle wrote how, “Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Are you the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, You said it. And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing. Then said Pilate unto him, Do you not hear how many things they witness against you?”, and in chapter twenty-seven and verse fourteen of his book, Matthew wrote how Jesus, “answered him to never a word” where we read:
And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marveled greatly.
The verse reads, “And he answered him to never a word;” Matthew began words, “and he answered him” which means “and Jesus responded to Pilate” “to never a word” which means “with not a single word or speech”. Matthew shared how Jesus did not respond to “Pilate” even as He did not speak to the “religious leaders”.
The verse goes on to say, “insomuch that the governor marveled greatly.” Matthew continued with the word, “insomuch” or “then, therefore and wherefore” “that the governor” which means “the leader, guide, ruler, prefect, president, chief, general, commander and sovereign” “marveled greatly” which means “wondered exceedingly and beyond measure in admiration”. Matthew shared how “Pilate” “wondered in admiration” when Jesus did not respond to his question.
When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus fulfilled Isaiah's prophesy, “He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he opened not his mouth.” (See Isaiah 53:7). Jesus was silent because He followed every prophesy concerning His first advent, and since His desire was to “save” all people from the penalty of death for their sin, He endured every one of these things. God loves people, and He “gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (See John 3:16) Let all who consider Jesus' silence understand that He was quiet for them, and may they yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.
Next time Matthew shares how, “the governor wanted to release unto the people a prisoner”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
