The Leaders Take Counsel to Kill Jesus - Matthew 27:01

Matthew the apostle wrote how, “Peter sat without in the palace: and a damsel came unto him, saying, You also were with Jesus of Galilee. But he denied before them all, saying, I know not what you are saying. And when he was gone out into the porch, another maid saw him, and said unto them that were there, This fellow was also with Jesus of Nazareth. And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man. And after a while came unto him they that stood by, and said to Peter, Surely you also are one of them; for your speech bewrays you. Then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately the cock crew. And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, you shall deny me three times. And he went out, and wept bitterly”, and in chapter twenty-seven and verse one of his book, Matthew wrote how, “all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death” where we read:

When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people

took counsel against Jesus to put him to death:

The verse reads, When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people ...” Matthew began word, “when” which means “at the time and moment” “the morning was come or “the day break or dawn came to pass, happened, arose and appeared”, “all the chief priests” which means “each, every, the whole and everyone of the high priests” “and elders” or “the advanced in age, seniors and members of the great council or Sanhedrin” “of the people” or “pertaining to the group, tribe, nation and those of the same stock and language were of Israel”. Matthew shared how the “religious leaders” came together again “early” in the “morning”.

The verse goes on to say, “... took counsel against Jesus to put him to death:” Matthew continued with the words, “took counsel” or “procured and seized deliberations and consultation” “against Jesus” which means “in opposition to Jesus whose name means Jehovah is Salvation and is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate” “to put him to death” or “to destroy, be liberated from, mortify and kill Jesus”. Matthew shared how these religious leaders gathered together again so they might “deliberate” about killing Jesus.

When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, once again tears should flow from our eyes as we consider the “evil” nature of these religious leaders. Though they thought they were doing God's will and service, they were actually planning to “kill” His Son. All this was submitted to by Jesus because His desire was to “save” every person from their sins so they might live eternally with Him. “Sin” separates a person from God, and as long as “sin” is within a person's life they shall receive the penalty of death. Physical “death” is certain for all people as Hebrews chapter nine and verse twenty-seven says, And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:”, and Jesus endured these things so people might not be “eternally dead” which is separation from God. Let all who read these words think about what Jesus did for them and yield their lives to Him to be eternally “saved”.

Next time Matthew shares, “when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
