Matthew the apostle wrote, “Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders. Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see you to that. And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself. And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood. And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in. Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this day.”, and in chapter twenty-seven and verse nine of his book, Matthew wrote how the words of Jeremiah (Zechariah) prophesy were “fulfilled”” where we read:
Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value;
The verse reads, “Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, ...” Matthew began word, “then” which means “at that time and moment” “was fulfilled” or “was consummated, rendered full, furnished, supplied, executed and brought into realization” “that which was spoken” which means “the words that were uttered, declared and proclaimed” “by Jeremy” or “through Jeremiah whose name means whom Jehovah has appointed and was the son of Hilkiah of the priests that were in Anathoth. He was called very young (B.C. 626) to the prophetic office, and prophesied 42 years” “the prophet” which means “the one who was moved by the Spirit of God and hence his organ or spokesman and solemnly declared to men what he received by inspiration, especially concerning future events and in particular such as relate to the cause and kingdom of God and to human salvation”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”. Matthew shared how the “prophesy” of Jeremiah (Zechariah) was “consummated and brought to realization” when the “chief priests” bought the potter's field.
The verse goes on to say, “... And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value;” Matthew continued with the words, “and they took the thirty pieces of silver” or “and the religious leaders used the thirty silver coins as”, “the price of him” which means “the deference, reverence and value of the man” “that was valued” or “who was estimated, honored, revered and venerated” “whom they of the children of Israel” which means “who the descendants and offspring who belonged to the nation of Israel which means he shall be a prince of God” “did value” or “had deference, reverence and value”. Matthew shared how the “religious leaders” among the “people of Israel” valued their Messiah at a price of only thirty silver coins.
When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how this event “fulfilled” another prophesy concerning Jesus Christ. The Messiah was looked for and valued among the people of Israel, and yet, when He was actually among them, they “estimated” His worth to be “thirty silver coins”. They paid Judas “thirty silver coins” to “betray” Jesus, and they took the “coins” to purchase a “potter's field”, and all this was done to point to Jesus as the Christ, the Son of the Living God. Though this prophesy is actually from the book of “Zechariah” (See Zechariah 11:12-13), all who look into these things will find Jesus to have completed many Old Testament prophesies while He was here on earth , and when they see them, the best response is to submit their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.
Next time Matthew shares more of Jeremiah's (Zechariah's) prophesy, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
